Light fixture IP Codes

Light fixture IP Codes

Subject:   IP CODES

(Not to be confused with Intellectual Property or IP Address)

IP Code, means; "Ingress Protection Rating" or may also be interpreted as the "International
Protection Rating".

Preamble:
Many Light fixtures list an IP Code number under specifications. For those not familiar with
IP codes you may find it interesting to know, many experienced professionals consider the
IP Code, one of the most important pieces of information in the list.

A basic understanding of IP Codes will assist shoppers in locating products suited to their needs.
Countless combinations of numbers and letters can be combined to make up IP Codes.
We will Only address IP Codes most frequently found on our products; IP65, IP67 and IP68.

We know IP means "Ingress Protection Rating" Following this, each Digit, Numeric or Alphabetic,
has a specific meaning of little importance to most customers who just wish to know if the fixture
can withstand the conditions under which they intend to use it.

The most frequently asked questions are;
• Is the fixture suitable for indoor and outdoor use? (is it water and weatherproof?)
• Is the fixture submersible? (Can it be submerged in a swimming pool or pond?)

Knowing the meaning of the first digit, number 6 and meaning of the second digit, number
5,7, or 8 is all that is required for you to determine whether the fixture is suited to your needs.

To read an IP code, look at the numbers or letters as two distinct and separate digits so for 65
 we would see 6 and then 5.
The first digit indicates what solids might enter the fixture (From any size object to fine dust)
and the second digit indicates what level of fluid (from drops to a pressurized stream) might
enter the fixture.

6 is the highest degree of dust free integrity possible;
• No ingress of dust; complete protection against contact

The second digit signifies what degree of liquid is prevented from entering the fixture.
We have three digits to consider; from IP 65, IP67 and IP 68 we get 5, 7, &
They are defined as follows;

5 is a moderate degree of watertight integrity;
   Water projected by a nozzle against enclosure from any direction has no harmful effects

7 is a higher degree of watertight integrity;
   Ingress of a harmful quantity of water is not be possible when the enclosure is immersed
   in water under defined conditions of pressure and time (up to 1Meter depth).

8 is the highest watertight integrity rating;
   The equipment is suitable for continuous immersion in water under conditions specified by
   the manufacturer. Normally, this means the equipment is hermetically sealed. However,
   with certain types of equipment it can mean water may enter but only in such manner as to
   produce no harmful effects

APPLYING IP CODES:

IP 65
Indoor and Outdoor use IP 65 is considered acceptable except under extreme conditions. If a fixture is to be installed in a car wash for example, where it could be subjected to high power hoses it would be much better to consider IP 67.

IP 67
An IP 67 rating is ideal for use in a shallow pond (maximum depth 1 meter) such as a Fish Pond or Lily Pond where a fixture may be used for various purposes.

IP 68
If the fixture will be immersed in depths over 1 meter or for long periods of time IP 68 would be the wise choice.

Disclaimer:
This brief explanation does not completely cover the IP or "Ingress Protection Codes" which will in some cases indicate; strength, ability to withstand rough treatment, and several other factors. For those who wish more information it can be found on the Internet under several headings. For one of the most comprehensive and accurate definitions of IP Codes we would recommend Wikipedia
